A Look Into SAPsMaMa's Diaper Stash!

Since even before I started this blog, I've had many questions regarding "what cloth diapers are my favorite" "what diaper so you use most often" "are these worth it"?
So, I think it's about time I give you all the grand tour! :)

What did I use for newborn diapers?

18 BumGenius Bamboo Fitted diapers (resold)3 Thirsties XS covers (resold)

We chose these diapers because I heard of how soft they were, and fitteds came highly recommended for newborns. Thirsties was chosen becuse of their leg gussets...I wanted no newborn breastmilk poo coming out! And had great success with these.

After Newborn diapers, what did I move to using?

24 BumGenius 3.0 OS diapers (6 have since been accidentally thrown out at daycare)
6 BumGenius 3.0 OS diapers with fleece lining instead of suede

These diapers were actually bought before the Bamboo fitteds. I had thought the "one size" would fit from birth, but after research, and knowing SAP would be a small baby, decided I needed newborn diapers.I had only 24 of these at first, then purchased the 6 fleece lined ones as additional diapers for starting daycare. The BumGenius 3.0 were mainly chosen because of their high recommendation, the fact that they were cheaper than other brand name one sized diapers, and also because they looked like they'd be easiest to use for daycare use.

What do I use for night time diapers?
First...

6 Infant prefolds (Now passed onto a friend)2 Thirsties Small Covers (Now passed onto a friend)

Second...

The 6 BumGenius OS 3.0 fleece lined diapers I mentioned earlier, stuffed with microfiber insert and either a hemp babies doubler or a Joey Bunz doubler, sized medium

Third...

4 AppleCheeks Envelope Sized 2 diapers with Bamboo inserts

Now...

3 DreamEze Fitted Diapers2 Thirsties Medium Covers
2 DreamEze AIO Large Diapers
2 DryBees Fleece Night time Medium Sized Diapers

Children's sleeping patterns (and bodily functions) differ from age to age, so night diapering also changes. The BG were leaking from SAP sleeping on her side at first, but then they worked great. We tried the Applecheeks for their great fit with the elastic in the front and on the legs, worked great. Prefered them as day time diapers though. Now we moved to DreamEze because SAP pees more at night and I wanted to move to more natural fabrics. All the above night diapering worked great at the times they were used.

What does my Cloth Diaper Stash look like now?

Since I've started cloth diapering, I"ve come to a few conclusions.

One, one type of diaper is not the answer. There is no one perfect diaper! Babies are different sizes, and shapes, and both their size and shape will change so much and so many times during their diapering years. I wanted to diversify my stash!

Two, as much as I prefer pockets over all, I wanted to try out different types of diapers. Since I started cloth diapering hybrid diapers had come out! AIO diapers, which had seemed expensive to me at first, looked like they'd be very handing for a few situations, nice to have around.

Three, prefold diapers, which are considered old school, actually worked much better than I expected and weren't hard at all! and they were so cheap, why not have them around! I needed some emergency diapers, for car etc., so I would NEVER have a reason to EVER need to purchase a disposible diaper. Prefolds seemed to be the cheapest answer to that!

Four, SAP had some problems with heat rash last summer, I wanted to try having more fitted diapers, fleece covers, or wool covers to prevent that from happening this summer, especially with the heat that we've had so far!

Five, I wanted to go to more natural fabric. Cloth diapering is an excellent green choice, but after learning about fabrics and why to choose organic or natural clothing, I wanted to also choose more natural and organic cloth diapers.

Six, although having daycare specific diapers that are easy to use in my stash, I don't really like velcro! I prefer snaps! So I wanted to sell some of my many BG 3.0 diapers and get some new snap diapers of different brands!

Seven, I've discovered blogging and daily deal sites! I'm doing cloth diaper reviews for my blog, so I can get many kinds of diapers free! Also, I've discovered daily deal sites! So I've found cloth diapers at half off or more! Perfect for diversifying my stash!

So, my days of only BumGenius diapers that were daycare and grandparents friendly were long gone. I was ready for the change! So over the last few months, this is what my stash looks like now!!!

Too Small (either outgrown, or won from giveaways and are too small):

2 Rumparooz L'il Joeys (Won at a twitter party, so adorable! Can't wait to have next baby to try these out!)

1 Medium Thirsties AIO Pocket Diaper (outgrown)
Daycare specific diapers:

24 BumGenius OS 3.0 Diapers, 6 fleece lined (only 6 are in use as the elastic and velcro are very worn out and I need to repair them, slowly doing so!)
2 BumGenius AIO Sized Large (Both free from coupon deal!)
1 Thirsties AIO Sized Large (Half price!)

Fitted Diapers, Prefolds, and Covers, Used only at home:
1 Thirsties Fab Fitted Sized Large (Bought on sale)
1 LoveyBums Hand Painted Diaper (Review for blog! Watch for the giveaway coming soon!)
1 Nifty Nappy Hospital Diaper (Won on a giveaway!)

1 Sandy's Motherease Fitted Sized Large (one of my "I want to try it" buys, a little bit on sale)
12 Premium Indian Prefolds
4 Hemp Babies Bigger Weeds
2 Thirsties Sized Medium Covers (cheap anyway, paid full price)
1 Mommy's Touch Snap OS Cover (Second quality, clearance site)
1 Mommy's Touch Velcro OS Cover (Second quality, clearance site)
1 Nifty Nappy Woolie Cover (Won in a giveaway)
1 Nifty Nappy Wool Longies (paid full price, but well worth it!)

Daytime, Anywhere diapers (No Daycare Use):

1 FuzziBunz OS Pocket Diaper (Bought on clearance)
1 FuzziBunz Perfect Sized Diaper, Sized Large (Bought on clearance)
5 AppleCheeks Envelope Covers, 4 Bamboo Inserts (only 1 Applecheeks functioning as elastic is over stretched and needs repair)1 BabyKicks Bumboo Pocket 1.0 Diaper (Half Price deal site)
1 Smartipants OS Diaper (On sale, came with no insert though)
3 Rumparooz Snap OS Diapers (1 only 10% off "had to try" buy, 2 half price site deal of the day!)

2 GroBaby Shells, 6 Organic Soaker pads, 2 Organic doublers, 2 Stay dry doublers (1 bought 60% off, 1 was a splurge because I wanted to try a hybrid diaper! lol)
1 Flip Cover, 3 Organic Flip inserts (Paid full price, but used 2 coupons to get 2 free BG AIO! Still a deal!)

Night Time Diapers and Doublers:

3 DreamEze Fitteds Sized Large (Half price deal of the day)
2 DreamEze AIO Sized Large (Half Price deal of the day)
2 DryBees Fleece Night Time Diapers, Sized Medium (Discontinued color Clearance site buy)

6 Hemp Babies Doublers (Clearance site, overstock buy)
4 Joey Bunz sized medium Doublers (full price, but defiantly needed them when I bought them, so worth it!)
1 AppleCheeks Hemp doubler (bought on Facebook from someone reselling)

Diapers Not Used:

These are diapers recently bought and not washed or in rotation as of yet, or diapers I bought as deal of the day, can't pass up deals and debating to keep or not. Some I might sell if you're interested!

1 Bumkins AIO Sized Large Diaper (Just got in mail, was sent wrong pattern, need to return/receive correct diaper, was bought 50% off deal of the day)

2 Cutey Baby Diapers (Half off site. Haven't gotten pre-washed yet, nor tried yet)
2 DreamEze AIO Sized Large (Already have so many DreamEze, not sure if I"ll keep them, so haven't washed them yet. Half price deal of the day. Interested in them? Let me know!)

1 Berry Plush cover (Need to purchase inserts, so haven't pre-washed it yet. Was in a surprise diaper package from a half price deal of the day site)

1 Aristocrats Wool Soaker (Needs to be lanolized, so haven't used it yet)

Final Word:

Have any questions on any of the diaper I've used? Check my diaper reviews! But if I havn't gotten to it yet, feel free to email me questions! Have a problem with night time diapering, or leaking during the day, or repelling issues....any questions, I'll try to help! Yes, I have alot of diapers, but I havn't spent alot of money. And you can do it too! Visit Deal a day sites, 'stalk' diaper shops on facebook for their random giveaways, follow their blogs, don't be afraid to buy seconds or discontinued diapers! It's fun to try the new diapers that are coming out with all the adorable prints, and I myself splurged a few times on a few really cute brand name diapers I wanted to try, but I think there is no reason why you should have to pay full price for a cloth diaper with all these deals available! :) Good luck on your cloth diapering mamas and daddys!

Computer problems!

So first and foremost, I have not updated you on this, but a few weeks ago I got myself my very own computer! Ordered the parts and had it built at my house by my wonderful fiance.

Unfortunately we've had problems from the start. First, had an incompatible processor, so had to return the first on (opened of course), and get a new one. Then the video chip had some dealio wrong with it. Very stressful. But then,... it worked! I had my own computer and could get my blogging done more often!

Unfortunatly, had no sound. So today we plugged in my speakers...and guess what happened? Computer TURNED OFF, and would NOT turn back on! After having one of my wonderful computer literate friends go through it well past his lunch break, it was determined that I had fried my motherboard, and anyone that knows anything about computers knows that is bad ...and expensive! Hopeing to get a replacement on warrenty, but one has been purchased first, had hoped to get it within a day, but won't get it until monday earliest.

So you got it, I am once again WITHOUT a computer! I may get some minor time on my fiance's computer, and can check my email on my lunch break at work, but I will not be able to get on as much as I"m used to.

I do have my DryBees diaper review ready to post after I get a few pictures taken for it, so that shall go up asap! And I think I"ll do a little post on my personal cloth diaper stash for all those out there who were interested, so check for that today or tomorrow :) I'll still be around, just not much, so please bear with me until computer issues resolve themselves (and please pray it is not too expensive! ) lol

Thanks for the patience! Just FYI my Beautiful Creatures giveaway will be ending tomorrow evening as planned, so get your entries in!

Medela Nursing Cami Winner and Survey Results!

And the very lucky winner of the Medela Nursing Cami is...

True Random Number Generator 28

Kacy!!! Who said...

Kacy said... I follow Medela on Twitter

Congratulations Kacy!! I will email you soon!!

And now for the Results of the Medela Survey Questions!

Question #1:
What would you consider an essential nursing item?

Results to #1:

  • Pump In Style Breastpump X6
  • Medela Reusable Breast Pads X2
  • Medela Nursing Cami X2
  • Seamless Underwire Nursing Bra
  • Comfort Nursing Bra
  • Any Medela Nursing Bra X2
  • Medela Harmony Breastpump X2
  • Any Medela Breastpump
  • Quick Clean Bags
  • Nursing Stool
  • Breast Shield
  • Medela Freestyle Breastpump X2
  • Breast Care Gift Set
So it looks like A LOT of people love Medela's Pump In Style!

For other essential Medela Nursing items, runner ups were: reusable breast pads, nursing cami, any nursing bra, Medela Harmony Breastpump, and the Medela Freestyle Breastpump!

Question #2:
Please share, which are you: Considering nursing, Nursing beginner, Seasoned Nurser, Weaning, or Post nursing?

Results to #2:

  • Considering Nursing/Pregnant: 3
  • Nursing Beginner: 2
  • Seasoned Nurser: 5
  • Weaning:
  • Post Nursing: 2
  • Tandem Nursing: 1
  • Nursing and Pregnant: 2
  • Pumping: 1

So it looks like the majority are Seasoned Nursers! Then there are a few out there pregnant and considering nursing! Hope these survey questions help you see some other nursing mommy's opinions on essential items etc.! :)

Question #3:
How long do you plan to nurse, or how long have you nursed your child/children?

Results to #3:

  • 15 months (self weaned) X2
  • 12 months (self weaned due to pregnancy)
  • 12 months, weaned
  • 13 months, weaned
  • 14 months, weaned
  • 14 months (weaned due to hyperemesis)
  • Currently nursing 22 month old (and pregnant!)
  • Currently nursing 12 month old (and pregnant)
  • Currently nursing 19 month old (and pregnant) planning on self weaning
  • Currently nursing 2 year old and 6 month old
  • Currently nursing 16 month old
  • Currently nursing 10 month old
  • Planning on nursing until self weans X2
  • Planning on nursing until about 2 years old
  • Planning on nursing for 12 months X2

So for those who have weaned, between 12-15 months was the most common time, some self weaning, others not, and some due to pregnancy or other reasons. I'd also like to add that SAP was weaned at 14 months, and it was very hard on me. I did not want to wean that early and had wanted to nurse for 2 years, but due to starting a full time job to provide for my family I had to wean. Up until this point I had nursed exclusively (no formula ever!) and pumped/bottle fed when I was in work or college classes and couldn't get to the daycare for a feeding, but a full time job was too much for us. So this would make14 months would be the most common time, with 15 months shortly behind!

For those who are currently nursing wow! Many of you are not only nursing older babies, but are pregnant too! I'm impressed! Proud of you mamas!

And for those of you who are planning on nursing, quite what I had expected, the comment 12 months, 2 years, or until self weaning. The 12 months and self-weaning seemed to be equally popular in this section, although with as many currently nursing mothers who have gone past 12 months, seems that self-weaning is seeing a lot of mothers moving in that direction! :)

Question #4:
What is your favorite nursing product? It does not have to be Medela, I just am interested to know!

Results to #4:

  • Pump In Style X3
  • Nursing Tanks!
  • Breast pads
  • Boppy Nursing Pillow X2
  • Cabbage, for sore nipples!
  • Lansinoh Breast Pads
  • Lansinoh Lanolin X2
  • Freestyle Breastpump
  • Freemie (hands free pumping product, NEW!)

So, once again, the favorite item is the Pump In Style Breastpump! I should really look into that one I think! And runers up, no surprise here, Boppy nursing pillow, and then Lansinoh Lanolin (or other lanolin) product! I agree with you mamas, definatly a must!! Breast pads also mentioned but seemed people had different preferences here.

Congrats once again to Kacy!! Good luck to everyone else on my future giveaways, don't give up!

Update on Making Your Blog Carbon Neutral!

So I posted this past weekend about how to make your blog carbon neutral, and I got SUCH a response! I'm so glad you all love the program as much as I do! If you missed that post, check it out HERE!

I was searching around their website, and it was said that they were planing the trees in Spring 2010...so I got a bit worried that this program had already closed....nope! Here is the email I got in return after sending them my "Carbon Neutral" post and signing up for the program!

Hi Melissa,

thank you so much for participating in our initiative and making your blog carbon neutral! Your tree will be planted next month by the Arbor Day Foundation. The scheduled start plant date was Monday, April 19 and the trees will be planted by a contracted crew. The roads are being plowed, all contracts solidified, and twelve shipments of 150,000 seedling each are being assembled. We thank you for the support!

There are still some trees looking for a sponsor. So if you know some people who have a blog or website, pass it on and we'll make their blogs carbon neutral too!

Best,

Melanie
"Make it green"-team

Awesome!! So hop on board and make your blog Carbon Neutral too! It's as simple as a blog post, and having a button on your blog and you're making a big difference!

And remember, anyone who participates gets a free entry into EVERY one of my giveaways from now until an undetermined time, and there are some WONDERFUL cloth diaper companies and other big giveaways coming up in the next month or so, so you'll want those extra entries!! :)

My Blog is Carbon Neutral and Eco-Friendly, is yours?!

Since I started blogging and spending more time online I have had many people ask me the same, or similar, question. If I am blogging about going green and natural, but I'm using the internet, doesn't that make me a hippocrate and I'm doing more harm than good?

I do hope that by spreading the news on how to go toxin-free and more green I am creating a more healthy environment for many families and that my carbon footprint is a minority amount, but there IS something more I can do (and you too!)

Carbon Neutral Your Blog!

local shopping offers and coupons with kaufDA.de

How? All you have to do is join the "My Blog Is Carbon Free" program brought to you by Make It Green!, a company in Germany, and The Arbor Day Foundation! For every blog that joins them, they will plant one tree!

But not just any tree! Want to know where the trees are planted? You will be helping out the re-planting of the Plumas National Forest in Northern California, which had severe fires in 2007. The fires were caused by several lightning strikes and burned an astonishing 23,000 acres of forest!!

So let's get the forest back! And let's reduce our carbon footprint and make our blogs carbon neutral!

Are you wondering, does this really work? Does this really off-set my carbon footprint enough to make my blog carbon neutral? Find out at 1 Tree + 1 Blog = Carbon Neutral on their website!

Want to learn more?!

I believe this is such a great cause that I will give an extra entry into EVERY one of my giveaways, up until an undecided time, for any blogger that participates in this program! Look for this entry in the "Extra Entries" part of my giveaways! :)

Learn how to participate (It's very easy!) and more about the program at their website HERE!!

I would like to thank Home Grown Families blog for posting about this program so I could learn about it and join! :)

My First Blog Award!

So I won my first blog award earlier this month from the wonderful blog Buzzing The Day Away, but have been soooo busy have not had a chance to tell you about it let alone pick who I wanted to pass the award on to! Thought I'd take the time tonight!

So what award did I, SAPsMaMa, win?! The Versatile Blogger Award! Whoo hoo!

So, to accept this award here is what the rules are:

(1) Thank the person who gave it to you;
(2) Tell 7 things about yourself; and
(3) Pass the award on to 5 bloggers, whom you have recently discovered and think are fantastic.

Thank You!

Thank you once again Buzzing The Day Away! My dear followers, show them some love and head on over to their blog and see everything they have to offer! Some features are their giveaways (3 right now!), their Thursday's Train to Facebook, Following Friday, and Memorable Mondays!

Now for part number 2, seven things about myself! Now I've been meaning to tell you all alittle more about myself and my family, so this is a great opportunity for you to learn a bit more about me! Hmm, might even make it a giveaway entry question! *hint hint!*

7 Things About Myself:

1. I own 3 Bearded Dragons, and used to own 8, and was Bearded Dragon breeder!
2. I have 4 tattoos, each of them a different story, meaningful, and unique!
3. I love to sew and knit, but have not had time to do it for fun since my daughter was born :(
4. I love metal and rock music, the classics, not all the new stuff that sounds the same!
5. As my fiance put it, I am "very much into protecting the world from our own stupidity" ! lol
6. I don't like scruffy beards, give me a clean shaven man! *hint hint honey!* :)
7. I was vegetarian for many years, and still don't eat red meat, not because of morals or anything, meat makes me sick, at last it did until I got pregnant! I can now eat white meat, fish and some top grade red meat, but in limited quantities. Can't eat eggs either.

Now the hard part, passing it on to 5 bloggers I recently discovered and think are fantastic

My 5 Blogs I have feel deserve this!

1. Going Green With Noah! A great "green" blog about a family trying to go green! I especially like their giveaway and their adventures in Baby Food Making!

2. No Moo For Me! Although I do not need Dairy Free recipes, the foods and other eco-friendly products posted on this blog have opened me up to better cooking and products I would not have known about!

3. Eco-Friendly Family! If you're looking for up to date green topics/discussions, and some great green products and giveaways, check them out! Aways a pleasure to read their blog posts, and they don't post too much like others I follow, so I can keep up with them quite a bit easier in my busy work week!

4. Confessions of a First Time Mom! I enjoy this blog and reading about her family, makes me feel like I'm not alone in all this! Head on over and give her some love please, she has been going through a real rough time lately and I think she needs our support right now!! :)

5. Fitteds and Pockets and Snappies, Oh My! Ok, so I'm not really "new" to this blog, but I have a new appreciation for it! The very detailed reviews and giveaways with a lot of pictures Maria posts are very helpful to me and the many people I have recommended her blog to! I also love the list of blogs and giveaway linkeys sorted by day, very helpful! Head on over and take a look at what she can offer!

I hope all 5 of you enjoy this award and can't wait to see your posts as well! Thank you Buzzing the Day Away, this was fun, I hope to do this again soon! :)

Beautiful Creatures CD Review and 3 winner Giveaway!

SAP's Story

The benefits of children growing up exposed to different cultures are numerous, and it gives them a wide range of knowledge and tolerance that can't be influenced on them when they are older. That is one reason why when I see a product that is fun, educational, and has a cultural or ethnicity dimension to it, I want to try it!

You can see why I was excited to do this review for the Beautiful Creatures CD: Beautiful Creatures Children’s songs of Africa by Ed Jordan and Alan Glass”!

When I was contacted by Paul from Beautiful Creatures, I listened to the demo song, Imvubu The Happiest Hippo, and I laughed! How did he know I loved hippos?! He didn't of course but it was meant to be! Yes I have a weird love of hippos and this song was a great kids song, and following it were more songs about animals and their well known characteristics! Such songs included Lucus The Lazy Lion and Wallace the Wonderous Warthog, both which were fun to dance and run around to with our daughter!

Besides songs about animals from South Africa, there were also songs about life in general which I liked a lot, and a couple night time lullaby songs.

This CD was only one of seven CD's that The Beautiful Creatures has!

SAP, SAPsDaDa, and I all had a wonderful time dancing around the house before bed and this made me realize that I should do so more often! Just not before bed because she had so much fun it got her rowdy and nighty night ended up being later than usual :)

Beautiful Creatures is also quite modern! For those families out there that don't like buying CD's and would much rather download music for use in your MP3 player etc., check out Beautiful Creatures, available on iTunes!!

Info on The Beautiful Creatures

(Info in italics given courtesy of Beautiful Creatures)

Beautiful Creatures was formed in South Africa in November 2004 by Alan Glass, Ed Jordan, and Paul Choritz who felt there was a need for 'Parent Friendly' children's music. Using the best session musicians, actors and singers in the country, Beautiful Creatures prides itself on being uniquely South African with a positive global message.

The last five years have seen the release of seven Beautiful Creatures albums: Beautiful Creatures, More Beautiful Creatures, and Even More Beautiful Creatures, featuring fun educational songs about African animals. Beautiful Me, an album dealing with emotional development for children, tackling issues such as sibling rivalry, anger management, self-confidence and diversity. Beautiful Bedtime, songs that take your children through the routine of getting ready for bed. Winding down, bathing, brushing teeth, putting your p-jays on and story time. And Beautiful Creatures of The Sea, fun sea creature songs that deal with conservation. 2009 saw the release of Beautiful Lullabies featuring 10 down tempo songs to get your baby to sleep.

SAPsMaMa Review: Pros

  • I loved that it was South African cultural music, exposing my daughter to a different cultural music!

  • I thought the songs were very upbeat and happy and had a lot of energy behind them!

  • I liked that there were a mixture of songs, about animals, life, and lullabies

  • The songs were educational, but not overly educational. Kids like to listen to them!

  • I like that Beautiful Creatures provides "Parent friendly children's music", a must have with children's music as it will be played over and over!

  • I also like that some of their other CDs touch on things besides African animals, such as their Beautiful Creatures of the Sea CD which touches on conservation, and their Beautiful Bedtime CD which teaches bedtime routine and the importance of each step, including such chores as brushing your teeth! Very educational and instills great values in our children!
SAPsMaMa Review: Cons

  • The tunes are so catchy they get stuck in my head! Don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing...!

  • This CD is mostly available via download through itunes etc., I guess I'm old fashioned but I do prefer a hard copy in CD form! I know not very green of me but it's true!

  • I would have prefered more lullabies/night time tunes, the songs were too upbeat to use before bed. However, I do know that Beautiful Creatures does have a CD, Beautiful Lullabies, that is ONLY lullabies, so I won't complain too much about it, I'll just have to buy the other CD!
SAPsDaDa's Two-Cents

Although the company is out of South Africa and the music is upbeat and SAP liked it a lot, it would be nice if the company would incorporate not just an African flair, but more of a world view. It's nice to start off with what you know, but it's also wise to grow!

I'm sure my daughter will listen to this music as much as she can (or as much as we let her since it will get stuck in our heads!) and I'm glad that it teaches her about animals and South Africa and will make her more cultured and not blind to the world around her!

The Green/Non-Toxic/Natural Feature

  • Provides cultured educational music that is parent friendly!

  • Is available via itunes for download, so lessons the production of more products/materials, hence more environmentally friendly!

Buy It!

You can find Beautiful Creatures CDs on iTunes!!

You can also find all of their CDs and are able to order a CD through The Beautiful Creatures website!

Bargain Buy #1: Grandma El's Diaper Rash Remedy and Prevention Ointment!

SAP's Story

When you start cloth diapering, you come to a little bit of a problem...diaper ointment. It is recommended that you not use the 'normal' ointments you hear about in the department stores as they will build up and cause your diapers to repel, and leak (and in our case, happened right away!). So when you get a diaper rash, what do you do?

Well first of all, I learned, you will get less diaper rash (or none at all!) if you PREVENT diaper rash! I know it seems simple, but yes, that is one of the greatest answers.

Patting baby's bum with a dry wipe before putting on diaper or ointment is one way to prevent rash, as when you don't do this you trap moisture on baby's bum, which irritates and creates a rash.

Now, after drying off your baby's bum, put on a layer of protecting ointment! Doing this at every diaper change can help prevent diaper rash! With disposable diapers it is common for parents to use some for of a vitamin A&D ointment to do this job, but with cloth diapers, even this ointment is not recommended. So where does that leave us? That was my question when at about 6 months old and starting solids, SAP started getting irritation and rashes. Until this point her stools were just breastmilk poo, so we were lucky to not have to deal with this! We go to the store...could not find anything at the normal department store that was recommended for cloth diapers. oy, now what!

After some research online, I found Grandma El's Diaper Rash Remedy and Prevention ointment! Now this seemed to be the easy part, because Grandma El's was so popular that I could not find it stocked in the online diaper stores that I frequented! I was also a bit put off with what I thought at the time was an expensive price ( $10 for a 2oz tube, and $15 for a 3.75oz jar), which was by far a lot more expensive than the A&D ointment at the store that SAPsNaNa wanted me to buy!

I now know, compared to other organic, natural and cloth diaper safe ointments, Grandma El's is not that expensive at all, and actually pretty cheap! Especially when you find them on a Bargain site!!

The Bargain Buy!

November 7th, 2009 Baby Half Off (www.babyhalfoff.com) had their daily deal, and on this day it was Grandma El's Diaper Remedy and Prevention Ointment!

The deal was one 3.75oz jar, and two 2oz tubes of Grandma El's for just$17.48...50% off!! This deal also came with a $5 coupon for future savings when purchasing Grandma El's!

(The 2 2oz tubes and 1 3.75oz jar in the Bargain Buy! The left tube is the first tube I purchased. The right tube is a newer version. The older version had sticker label and was a thinner plastic. The newer version is much nicer tube, the label is part of the tube, not a sticker, the squeeze hole is a bit wider for ease of use, and the ingrediants etc. are easily legible on the back of the tube! All info is on the tube and jar!)

After getting a 2oz tube off of a online cloth diaper site before they featured this deal, this purchase ended up being my second Grandma El's purchase I made, and a much better deal! I have seen Grandma El's on this bargain site since then, and on other bargain sites as well (check out my "Bargain Buys and Daily Deals, Oh My!" blog post to find more daily deal sites!) Not necessarily this exact deal, but usually some combination of the above items.

About Grandma El's Diaper Rash Remedy and Prevention Ointment:

(This information in this section in italics is taken from the Grandma El's Website. Check out the Grandma El's website, where you can learn more and purchase Grandma El's, HERE!)

How It Works

Grandma El’s Diaper Rash Remedy & Prevention is a Patented Skin Soothing, and Healing Ointment. This unique Pediatrician Tested product has been used by Grandma El since 1974 to successfully treat and heal diaper rash.

Grandma El’s creates a skin softening, protective barrier which prevents wetness and stool enzymes from coming into contact with your baby’s bottom, while allowing the skin to breathe; something no other product offers. Grandma El’s promotes the growth of new skin collagen, which helps the healing process.

Grandma El has put an end to the white, messy paste, lotions, and creams. Grandma El’s knows that for the skin to heal, it needs to breathe. Other products coat the skin, and stop the skin from breathing, thereby slowing the healing process. Grandma El’s patented formula lets your baby’s skin breathe as it protects.

Recent studies have shown Grandma El’s Diaper Rash Remedy & Prevention to help in the following:

· Preventing skin breakdown

· Healing irritation and chapping· Promoting the growth of new skin collagen

· Soothing and softens baby’s skin making for a comforting experience

· Allowing skin to ‘breathe’ while protecting the skin from wetness and bacterial contamination Stopping redness, itching, pain, and soreness

Ingredients

Grandma El’s is manufactured by an FDA and cGMP compliant skin care product manufacturer. The formulation of Grandma El’s is comprised of ingredients which are derived from natural and organic origin, and contains no preservatives. Grandma El's only contains ingredients on the FDA GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) List and is Hypo-Allergenic so you can be assured your baby is getting the safest therapy.
Our ingredients:

  • Anti-oxidant Natural Vitamin E , derived from Wheat Germ Oil (D alpha tocopherol acetate)
  • Natural active derivatives of the plant Balsam of Peru, a known healing agent
  • Salicylic Acid, derived from Willow bark and Wintergreen; this ingredient acting with Vitamin E can promote the growth of new skin
  • Yellow Petrolatum, derived from naturally occurring mineral oil
  • Insecticide-free Anhydrous Lanolin, a naturally occurring, allergy-free protecting and healing agent

Yellow Petrolatum and Insecticide-free Anhydrous Lanolin are FDA approved healing agents and protectants, while Vitamin E, Derivatives of Balsam of Peru, and Salicylic Acid heal and stimulate production of new cells.

Many other well known diaper rash products contain ingredients which are not on the FDA GRAS List. Some of these unproven and possibly unsafe ingredients are sodium borate, benzalkonium chloride, boric acid, calcium undecylenate, hexachlorophene, p-chloromercuriphenol, phenol, resorcinol, and triclosan. Please refer to the product you currently use to see if these ingredients are used.

DOES NOT CONTAIN BORIC ACID (Boric Acid has been removed from the FDA Safe List, yet many products today still contain it). Please visit the FDA website at www.fda.gov for further information.

What did I think?!

I absolutely love Grandma El's! It is still a staple in our cloth diapering routine after over a year of use! The two tubes and one jar are definitely the perfect amount for us, we use one 2oz tube at daycare, one 2oz tube in the diaper bag, and the 3.75oz jar at the changing table at home where she has her most changes!

I was worried a bit at first with the jar, thinking I'd use too much or it would get messy, but not at all! I also love that it smells wonderful! When SAP had her regular well check-up at the pediatrician's office we mentioned we were using this ointment, and the pediatrician's answer was that any ointment that smells good like that probably has perfumes in it that won't be good for the diaper area...well she was wrong! Grandma El's smells good (unlike all other ointments I know of on the market like butt paste, triple paste, A&D ointment and many others that smell nasty and are really messy!), and it is easy to use, with no perfumes or toxic ingrediants!

Grandma El's also lasts a long time! Even using this ointment with every diaper change we did not run low for a really long time! When I did run low, I was able to get another bargain buy for half price! Whoot!

I also love that you don't have to put a thick layer of ointment on her bum for it to work. You put just a thin layer on! It is a breathable barrier, the only

ointment that I know of that allows this!

Want more to love about Grandma El's? The ingredients in Grandma El's are not only cloth diaper safe, but they are organic and natural!

SAPsDaDa's Two-Cents

Grandma El's spreads easy, it is a good cover. Unfortunately it does not help with the more severe cases, but it is a good prevention ointment fro m what I have experienced. If you start having trouble with a diaper rash while still using this ointment and the rash does not start going away, switch right away to a different ointment to treat it. I like to start with California Baby Calendula Cream (also cloth diaper safe!) and work my way up, with triple paste as my last resort (with a diaper liner of course with cloth diapers due to the damage/build up it can cause in the cloth diapers).

I myself have not noticed much of a smell that SAPsMaMa notices, so it should not be overpowering to other dads or individuals who are sensitive to fragrence. Either form, the jar or the tube, has worked well and I have no preference, although with the amount you get in the jar for the price it is a bit cheaper. If you are going on a trip you will want a tube. Being a smaller container, it is much easier to transport.

Daycares do not seem to understand how to apply this ointment well. Daycares tend to use this ointment the same way they use Vaseline and "glob" it on thick, instead of using a thin layer. If using this ointment for a daycare definitely explain thoroughly how to use it, and expect to be purchasing more ointment than normal as you will mo st likely go though a tube quicker. We have always given the daycare the tubes of ointment for convenience and less mess, a jar might serve better or fare worse, depending on your daycare situation.

(This 2oz tube is being used at the daycare currently with SAP, as you can see with the permanent marker label! It has stood up to heavy use much better than the previous design and will not open accidentally in the diaper bag, yet is still easy to open by the daycare users!)

Pros

  • Smells good
  • Works great at prevention as well as healing diaper rash
  • Not messy
  • Organic and natural ingrediants, none of the ingrediants recommended to stay away from
  • Safe to use with cloth diapers
  • Comes in big jar and travel tube
  • Breathable barrier, unlike other ointments
  • Lasts quite a long time
  • Preservative free
Cons

  • I have found that this ointment does not work for ex treme diaper rashes. Rashes due to fungal or bacteria infection, or that occur when baby is sick and has the 'runs' may need a different kind of ointment or cream to prevent or treat the rash.
  • Would be nice to have a larger sized tube, I do end up going through the 2oz alot quicker than the jar and end up using my jar in my diaper bag until I restock!
  • Ointment smells so good that SAP tries to eat it all the time! Keep out of reach of children! :)
