Thirsties Diaper Cover Review

SAP's Story

Before SAP was born and I choose to use fitteds for her first couple months of life, I soon realized I would also need a reliable diaper cover! My main focus when choosing a diaper cover was that it would not leak (of course!) even from those breastmilk poops, it was decent quality yet affordable since I was on a budget, and I needed one with a "scoop" in the center meant for newborns so the umbilical cord would not get irritated by the diaper cover. The result of my search let me to Thirsties Diaper Covers! These diaper covers were very affordable, brightly colored and appealing, and rumored to be the best out there for leak protection at any age! I decided these were our diaper covers for SAP!

These covers were awesome! We rarely got any leaks even with breastmilk poop! With 18 fitted diapers we had 4 Thirsties covers and rarely went through all of them before wash (which was every day and a half at that point). The covers were easily wipe-offable on the inside for between diaper changes, all the same we usually would wipe it off and let it dry and use a different cover before coming back to that one, just personal preference I think! We always hung-dry the covers and never put them in the dryer, although they are able to be dried on low I know letting them air dry preserves the elastic, and the elastic did wonderful and didn't wear out the entire time we used them and them re-sold them! They would dry really fast and were usable soon after being washed incase you are running late and need a cover right away, no worries! We had two red, a sky blue, and a melon (orange) color that was my favorite! None of the colors were overly girly or boyish, and were easy to resell afterward, especially with the great reputation that they had with being leak proof!
SAP less than 1 month old in an XS cover.

When SAP grew into her BumGenius One Sized Diapers and out of her BumGenius Bamboo Fitteds and Thirsties XS sized newborn covers, we still used Thirsties as our main cover! SAP learned to roll over, and thus started sleeping on her side or tummy, and leading to leaks from her BumGenius One Sized diaper! Our bullet proof solution to not having to change the sheets every night was newborn sized Indian Prefolds and Thirsties sized small covers! No more leaks! No more sheets needing chaged, no more baby waking up through out the night needing clothes all changed, no more extra loads of laundry! Happy all around! This continued to be our night time solution for a long time. We only purchased two of these covers in periwinkle and aqua colors for 6 newborn prefolds and had no problems running out of covers.
When SAP outgrew her newborn prefolds and we went to Premium Indian Prefolds we moved up to the Medium sized Thirsties covers without any leak problems at all. We purchased the Rasberry and the Lavender (can you tell I started getting more girly colors? lol) and the bright colors were so nice for summer time and brought a smile to my face still in the winter! SAP is at 14 months old now and she still uses these covers! We have used them over prefolds as well as over hemp babies bigger weeds and they fit great over any sized prefold, fitted, etc.! With the velcro tabs we could get a perfect fit each time even though her body shape has went form chubby to skinny and back! These are our number one go-to cover and I don't think I could have a diaper stash without them!

Descripti
on
  • Type of Diaper Cover: Velcro cover
  • Sizes and Weight Recommendations: XS 6-12lbs, S 12-18lbs, M 18-28 lbs, L 28-40lbs
  • How diaper works/features: This is a diaper cover, and so is used to cover any type of cloth diaper that is not waterproof (prefolds, flats, contours, fitteds, etc.). You put the diaper part on the baby first, then the cover goes over the diaper. This cover has velcro tabs and so can secure to any waist size for a perfect fit each time. The tabs are also double sided and can be over-lapped for skinnier or younger babies. There are laundry tabs available to secure the tabs for laundry time so they will no catch and pill your other diapers. All parts of the diaper must be tucked inside the diaper cover to ensure it is leak-proof. This diaper cover features unique double gussets that aid in the leak-proof process. This diaper cover can be used with more than one diaper change and can be wiped off on the inside between changes. If any poop gets on the cover it is recommended to wash it.
    Style and Material
  • Material Feel: Although this cover is able to be wiped off on the inside, it is not at all like "plastic pants". The cover is a soft and very flexible material on the outside and the inside is very smooth and able to be wiped off.
  • Materials Used: Made in the USA 100% polyester with urethane coating, free of PVC, phthalates, lead and latex! I LOVE this about Thirsties! A wipe off, water-proof cover that is free of any toxins, and USA made! Great job Thirsties!
  • Colors/Aesthetics: These diaper covers have no extra snaps or anything on them besidesthe velcro and the water proof material itself. The leg gussets seem to add a little more aesthetic appleal. These diaper covers come in a wide range of bright and happy colors, including aqua, baby blue, butter, candy pink, celery, lavender, melon, ocean, periwinkle, raspberry, red, sky blue, and white! Girly, boyish, and neutral colors that will match anyone's personality or outfit for the day! They do not however offer prints in these covers

SAP a monh and a half old in my favorite color Thirsties Cover, the melon!

    Ease of Use

  • Closures: The closures offered for this diaper cover are only velcro. The velcro is highly durable and crates a perfect fit every time. Laundry tabs are available to prevent pilling during wash. The closures are also double sided and can over-lap each other for a trimmer fit. The tabs are rounded and do not irritate baby's skin.
  • Similarity to Disposables: This is a diaper cover, and in and of itself is not a diaper. However, by itself it is very much like a disposable in how it is put on and is easily understood by people without instruction. However, because it has to be paired with a diaper and so is a two-step diapering system it is not the most similar to a disposable one can get with the cloth diapering system.

SAP about 1 month old getting a diaper change from Daddy, BumGenius Bamboo Fitted is being used under the Thirsties cover.

    Fit
  • Trimness: This cover is made of a single layer of fabric and of very thin polyester laminate and so does not cause any bulk at all, and in fact seems to make the diaper as trim as possible for what it is covering.
  • How Size and fit are adjusted: This diaper cover is a single-sized cover and cannot be adjusted for size. If you need a new size you need to go to the next sized cover. This diaper's fit is adjustable in the waist via the use of velcro for a closure, ensuring a perfect fit each time. Leg adjustability is done by the leg gussets that are unique to Thirsties diapers, but are not able to be individually adjusted.

SAP 2-3 months old, wearing her XS Thirsties Cover over a prefold!

    Performance and Functionality
  • Leaks: We had a few leaks with the XS covers covering the BumGenius Bamboo Fitteds and only when SAP had really bad blow outs. This was rare. We have not had any leaks since then! These are our number one night time cover and I use them all the time for prefolds now without any problems!
  • Leg Gussets: Thirsties diapers and diaper covers have unique double leg gussets! These make these covers very leak proof, preventing anything from coming out! The gussets did sometimes make marks on SAP's theighs because they'd become tight at times, but that can easily be adjusted with a change in the velcro tab closures and it did not bother SAP at all.
  • Nap/Bedtime use: These are our number one nap and bedtime covers! These far surpassed any night time diaper we have tried and I prefer to use these over anything else! For SAP being a side-sleeper she can sleep on her side and have no leaks from this diaper because of the great design of the leg gussets!

SAP at 3-4 months old wearing her size S aqua colored Thirsties over a prefold with a fleece liner in it!
  • If Fit is True: We have used XS, S, and M sizes in this cover for SAP, and we have experienced that the recommended size/weight range for these covers is accurate. When it was time to up-size to the next sized cover we did not experience any leaking as we have when it was time to up-size other diapers and covers, it just became more difficult to velcro on her and the tabs were quite far apart and seemed really snug. We have had no chance to try the large size and with the weight range it is most likely that the large size would only be needed for large babies or older toddlers that are not potty trained yet. A newborn might be able to use a size Small instead of the XS if no umbilical scoop is needed. It is quite possible only two sizes would be needed for cloth diapering, although the newborn XS size was excellent to use and I'd very much recommend all sizes in this cover.
  • Wear and Tear: The most wear and tear we got from these covers was when we were using them as our main diaper system when SAP was just born. These diaper covers would be washed every day and a half and hung dried. The wear and tear I experienced on these covers was some pilling in the velcro but nothing that would decrease the use of the velcro. I also experienced some elasticity loss around the leg gussets, but it did not decrease performance of these covers at all and they remained well usable for a long time. Over all wear and tear was pretty minimal and for the short amount of time most covers are used before baby outgrows them there should be no worry about wear and tear on these covers.
SAP in her aqua Thirsties size S at 4-5 months old!
    Quality/Cash Analysis
  • These diaper covers average $11.50 each, but I have seen them cheaper than that at certain diaper stores. For a wipe-clean diaper cover this is an average price. Other velcro wipe clean covers may be a dollar or so more, or a dollar or so less depending on brand. If comparing to other types of covers like one-sized covers, envelope covers, or pull on covers, it is more expensive than a pull-on plastic pants cover, less expensive than a one-size cover, envelope cover, or fleece wrap or any other type of cover. The quality of these covers is very well known and the durability and performance is excellent and well worth the price, I even say the price is lower than I would be willing to pay for this cover! If you are looking for a leak proof solution to nap time, bed time, or during the day, for a side-sleeper or belly-sleeper, a wipe off cover that will last a long time and fit without leaks even when baby is outgrowing it, this is your cover!

BumGenius Deluxe Bamboo Fitted Cloth Diaper Review

SAP's Story

BumGenius Bamboo Fitted Diapers were the very first diapers that SAP wore! When I had decided to use BumGenius 3.0 One-Sized diapers before SAP was born I knew BumGenius was one of the most trusted cloth diaper companies, and so when I realized that the one size diapers would not fit her little butt when she was born (she was under 7lbs), then I knew I had to find something else.
I wanted something that would be soft, pleasent for her to wear, very absorbant, and marketed specifically for newborns, and what I found was BumGenius Bamboo Fitted Diapers! They were not as "easy" to use as the one size diapers I had originally ordered since required an extra step of putting on a diaper cover over them, but they were cheaper than an all-in-one diaper and had all the requirements I was looking for!
We did not use these diapers right away when SAP was born, as much as we wanted to I had decided to wait a day or two. The wait was mainly due to the black, sticky mechonium poop that newborns have. This poop is very stinky, stains, and is hard to get out of fabric. Also, because we were in the hospital for the first couple days after SAP was born, they provided free diapers, thus it was easiest to use the diapers they provided. And third, there was no washing facility in the hospital, and I was recovering from giving birth, SAPsDaDa was off at police academy, SAPsNaNa was not supportive of cloth diapering and I was staying with her the first 6 weeks so I was not yet prepared to start our cloth diapering routine. And so, until the day SAP came home from the hospital, yes, she was in disposibles, and I would probly do this again in that situation.

However, the day we took SAP home from the hospital, she was in her BumGenius Bamboo Fitted Diaper! These diapers fit her very well (hence, fitted diaper haha). They were soft fabric and VERY absorbant! They made me fall in love with bamboo fabric ever since! These diapers fit under SAP's umbilical cord so they did not interfer with it's healing process at all.

We used Thirsties XS covers for these diapers, and so we only had maybe one leak while diaper and cover were on. These fitted diapers absorbed everything, even the breastmilk poo that is very runny! However, they did not keep the poo in the fitted diaper every time, as most people know breastfed babies are prone to having blow outs, I'm not sure any diaper can keep that poop in, however, the natural gussets of the diaper kept most of it in and the cover did keep it from leaking out completely so we had very few clothes changes, but we did go through more covers than we did with other diapers that needed a cover. We had 4 covers and 18 fitted diapers, and ended up doing wash every day and a half, but with SAP pooping so much as newborns do, it would have been nice to have more diapers and covers. Washing these diapers was no problem at all, the breastmilk poo was water soluable and so needed no extra cleaning steps, but not sure how they'd do for an older child on solids. The diapers never stank, although they did get some stains on them from the poo. These were easily taken care of by hanging them out in the sun to dry, and the sun bleached the stains out naturally! When we had to use the dryer in the winter to dry these diapers they did take a long time to dry as these fitteds aren't the thinnest diapers, however dryer balls reduced this drying time quite a bit, thus saving us electricity, so if you get any fitted or all in one diapers, I definatly recommend dryer balls for the winter time when you have to use a dr yer!

I definatly liked these diapers, they were especially nice on warm days, we could let SAP roll around in these on a fleece blanket and they would contain the pee, yet be breathable so she wouldn't get a rash from it being too warm in the diaper area and such. These were easy to use as they had a velcro closure and you could put them on just like a disposible diaper, no stuffing or anything, however, you still had to use a cover most of the time so there is that step, some people don't like two steps, me, I didn't care, they worked great and for the first few months of SAP's life she was rash free and didn't have chemical disposible diapers on her butt! They fit her great until she was old enough to fit into her BumGenius One sized diapers I had bought her, so I really don't know when she would have outgrown them, but they fit her for a few months no problem! The only cons I can think of was the increased drying time and the extra step of putting on a diaper cover, but I don't think those are big problems when it comes to diapers and comes with the territory of a fitted diaper. We did also get some marks on SAP's legs from her kicking alot and her legs rubbing on the leg closures of this diaper, but those went away and didn't leave any permanent marks. Fitted diapers are sometimes preferred by parents as there is less chance of leaking, the pee/poo has to get through the fitted diaper, then the diaper cover. They are also more trim and cheaper than the more expensive one-sized diaper or all-in-one diapers that are out there.

Description

  • Type of Cloth Diaper: Fitted

  • Sizes and Weight Recommendations: XS (Extra-Small) fits from 6-12 pounds. It is intended for a newborn and fits low, below the navel, to keep the umbilical area dry. This diaper is designed to fit during that itty-bitty newborn stage.
S (Small) fits from 8-16 pounds. This diaper is slightly larger with a higher rise than the XS. It is intended for after your baby's umbilical cord has fallen off.
    M (Medium) fits from 15 - 22 pounds.
    L (Large) fits from 22 - 30 pounds.

  • Seems you could probly skip either the XS or S size depending on size of your newborn. Also these diapers only go up to 30lbs so if your baby potty trains later or ends up being a big baby you might need a different type of diaper later on.

  • How Diaper Works/Features: This is a fitted diaper, and so it is not waterproof and requires a cover for normal use. It is one piece and does not require any special knowlege to use, just put it on like a normal disposible diaper, and it velcros on to baby to the waist size of your infant.
Style and Material

  • Material Feel: Material feels very soft against baby's skin. There is no stay dry layer so baby will feel wetness with this diaper, but the material against baby's skin is very soft.

  • Materials Used: Bamboo Terry is used mainly on this diaper and is the only material that touches your baby's skin. The soaker sewn into the fitted diaper is a microfiber terry, which is quick to absorb wetness.

  • Color/Aesthetic: This diaper is a creamy whiteish natural color of bamboo fabric and does not come in any color variations. However, you may put whatever color or patterned cover over it you wish! I like the creamy white color of bamboo, makes the diaper seem more natural that way and better for baby.

Ease of Use

  • Closures: This diaper has hook and loop (velcro) closures that easily attach for a perfect fit for any skinny or chubby baby. The closures are also double sided so that they can be attached on top of each other for the smallest newborn or skinniest of babies.

  • Similarity To Disposibles: The diaper itself is very similar to disposibles in that it is put on and closes in a very similar and easy to use fashion. However, because it requires a diaper cover it is not as similar as other diaper styles. There is no complicated snaps or size adjustments with this diaper.

Fit

  • Trimness: This is a very fit diaper, as most fitteds are. These diapers will fit very well under clothes.

  • Adjustability for Size/Absorbancy: This diaper does not have a pocket or any area to increase absorbancy. It is possible to have a doubler between the fitted and cover though, but I never needed to try it as the diaper was absorbant enough not to need any doubler. Size is not adjustable except for the waist, which is adjustable with velcro closures each time diaper is used. For new sizes you will have to go to the next sized diaper.

Performance and Functionality

  • Leaks: We had no leaks with this diaper! It was very absorbant and well fitted and so no leaks from the diaper itself. However, fitteds are only as good as the covers that are used with them, thus the preformance of this diaper would also be a reflection of the cover used with it.

  • Absorbancy: Absorbancy was excellent, we had no need for any doublers or any leaks due to lack of absorbancy. We only used this diaper when SAP was an infant up to maybe 3 months or so, so I cannot say how absorbant it is for an older infant or toddler.

  • Leg Gussets: There is elastic in the diaper around the legs that form natural gussets and help keep any messes inside the diaper, thus prolonging how many times the cover can be used.
  • Nap/Bedtime Use: These diapers worked just as well during the day as they did for naps and bed time! No leaks ever, even when SAP started to learn to roll. This is also a reflection of cover and so using a good cover could change the performance at these times but this diaper did excellent for SAP at both nap and bed times.

  • If Fit Is True: We used the size XS on SAP since she was brought home from the hospital, and this size did fit excellent from birth (between 6-7lbs) to the time she was big enough to fit into her BumGenius one sized diapers, which was about 10-12 lbs, we did not try to go past 12 lbs but had no fit issues or leaking issues at that weight so this fit and weight range was true, however, I have not tested the other sizes of this diaper. At 12 lbs the were starting to get tight around the waist of the diaper and this was an indication it was time to size up.

  • Wear and Tear: We had 18 of these diapers, washed every 1.5 days and dryed in a dryer most of the time. These diapers did show alot of wear in the laundry tabs where the velcro tabs are sapposed to stick for laundry time, thus they did not stay stuck and often caught on each otherafter a while. However, the fabric stayed in excellent shape and the rest of the velcro held wonderfully, we resold these diapers for a reasonable price and they were well usable for another infant.

Quality/Cash Analysis

  • These diapers average $12-$13 each, but can be bought in bulk packs for less per diaper and often are found on sale. For the abosorbancy of these diaper, how soft the fabric is, and how easy they are to put on, I think these are excellent quality, they have held up wonderfully and even though each size only lasts a few months, they can be used for 2-3 babies easily!

  • For a bamboo fitted diaper, this is an excellent price! You may find other fitted diapers this price or a couple bucks cheaper, but for bamboo fabric and the absorbancy you get with this diaper, the price is great. Other bamboo diapers will cost anywhere from $14-$20+ each, but these other diapers may use hemp or other organic fabrics in them, so that is a decision you would have to make. Also, this is one of the very few velcro fitted diapers, let alone velcro bamboo fitted diapers, and this makes it one of a kind! If you prefer velcro over snaps for that perfect waist fit each time, easy to use, most like a disposible diaper style, but want to go with a fitted diaper, this is the diaper for you!

BumGenius 3.0 One Size Cloth Diaper Review

SAP's Story

When I "researched" cloth diapering before SAP was born, I was under the impression that there was a "best" cloth diaper. Now that I'm a seasoned CDing mama, I know that there is no single cloth diaper that will work for every child, just like no single disposible does! But there are ones out there that do stand above the rest.

So when I started getting into cloth diapering I purchased my first cloth diapers from online at a store called Cottonbabies.com, and I purchased 24 Bumgenius 3.0 one sized diapers, thinking I've made the best decision. These were what was recommended as the best!

Coming close to my due date, and continueing my research, I soon found out that almost everyone was saying the BG one size diaper wouldn't fit a newborn! Um ah oh, now what? Since I had little money but I didn't want to start out with disposibles and get into that rut of the easiness of throw-away spoosies, I started shopping around looking for more great diapers ... this time for a newborn!

I did purchase newborn diapers but that's a story for another time. The BumGenius diapers have been well worth their money in many ways, even if they didn't fit SAP at first, they've fit her for well over a year now! They finally fit SAP at 8 lbs and fit her without leaking at all by the time she was 10 lbs! These are the main diapers SAP uses, for many reasons.

Now, when i was looking for my "perfect" cloth diaper, my main concerns were expense, ability to use them at daycare, ease of use for myself and my family, and the ability for them to fit until potty training so I wouldn't need to purchase any more cloth diapers (ha ya right, I got addicted and kept buying them, or winning them online! lol). Those needs all seemed to be met by the BumGenius One size diapers, and the video online demonstrateing how the stretchy tabs help get the BGOS onto a squirmy toddler without problems was an immediate sale!

The diapers were immediately easy to understnad how to use, and the similarity to disposibles made it easy for even Nana to change SAP's diaper! By the time SAP fit these she was a couple months old and the newborn inserts were no longer absorbant enough, so we have only ever used the regular inserts in these diapers. The newborn inserts however came in very handy to be used as doublers until SAP got older and needed better doublers.
Around 6 1/2 months old SAP started daycare and we came about a problem: 24 diapers was enough for home, but now we'd be leaving 6 at daycare....we needed more diapers! Back to Cottonbabies.com, and they had fleece lined BGOS 3.0 diapers! I ordered 6 of those, and we now use them as night time diapers for her since they are easy to tell apart from the regular lining in the other diapers, so we know these are the ones with doublers. It is great that the lining is offered in fleece and the suede (I believe that's what it is) since I know some babies are so sensitive that they can't use the regular lined diapers and need the fleece.

The cloth diapers and their bright colors were always a big hit with everyone, from family and friends to people walking on the street, but after starting d
aycare we had a whole new reason to love the BGOS cloth diapers....the workers and volunteers at the daycare could easily understand how to use them without a great amount of instruction! With the turnover at the daycare since it is a university daycare staffed with students, it was important that it be easy to understand, and I was very satisfied with my choice to trust BumGenius from the start of our cloth diapering!

We have come accross some problems with the BGOS diapers, but nothing too noticeable. The main thing we dislike is that the diaper is not as trim as we would like. It has not interferred too much with her clothing sizes, but it does cause her some difficulties when learning something new, like rolling, or walking. It took her alittle bit longer and she always did better rolling or walking with a different diaper on. A little bit more bulkiness is always expected with one size diapers so that is a choice you would have to make as to if it is what is most important to you or less important than other things. We also had problems with the BGOS diapers leaking at night once our daughter learned to roll and would sleep on her side or stomach. Until she was older and this was no longer a problem we used prefolds and covers at night so that we wouldn't have to change her sheets all the time, but this was one thing that could use some improvement, if there were some gathers in front or something or if they came up with a night diaper with different leg gussets for side sleeping babies this wouldn't be too much a problem, but it made it so we couldn't use these diapers at night for a few months...now they're her main night diaper as well as day! Also, once my daugher was a few months old she got curious and started playing with the velro on the diaper, and you know what that leads to! Diaper off! This is something all parents will have to figure out with their babies. Velcro is great for adjustability and a great personalized sizing, it is also easy to use by many people, but babies can easily get it off if they don't have clothes on. BumGenius does however make this one size diaper in organic with snaps! So not only does the baby benefit from organic fabric but you benefit from not having a naked baby running around! If you don't want to go all organic you could get a few snap diapers and the rest regular, or whatever suits your family! But BG thought of it all!

Description:

  • Type of cloth diaper: One size pocket diaper
  • Size: One sized (small, medium, large)
  • Ages/weight recommendation: Fits most babies from 7-35lbs (see actual fit sizes)
  • Insert: Microfiber Terry, regular size with three layers of microfiber (adjustable to small, medium, large settings), and newborn size with two layers of microfiber terry
  • How diaper works/features: The one-size feature of the BumGenius One-Size Pocket diaper is adjusted through what are called "rise snaps" on the front of the diaper. This enables the user to snap down to the smallest "newborn" setting, snap to the medium setting, or keep it unsnapped for the largest setting. The closure of this diaper is velcro, although this diaper is also made in organic with snap closure. The velcro closure has stretchy tabs to make fit adjustable. For laundry time, laundry tabs are located next to each velcro closure tab so that they will now catch on anything in the wash. This diaper is a pocket diaper, and so must be stuffed with an insert to be used effectively. The insert that it comes with is a microfiber insert by BumGenius which is quick and very absorbant, and should last the recommended 2 hours between diaper changes for a cloth diaper. A newborn insert/diaper doubler made of microfiber is also included. This can be used for newborns to reduce bulk when on the smallest, newborn setting, or it can be used as a diaper doubler for heavy wetters or nap time use of this diaper. This is a pocket diaper, and so it has a stay-dry layer made of suede material that wicks away moisture from the baby's bottom. This layer is also available in fleece with velcro closures on the diaper, or organic with snap closures on the diaper. I am reviewing the suede layer with velcro, and the fleece layer with velcro.

Style and Material:

  • Material feel: Outer material is soft, not too much like plastic, but still completely waterproof. Stay-dry layer is soft against baby's bottom, in both the suede and the fleece.
  • Materials used: This diaper is not organic, although another BumGenius design is offered in organic cotton.
  • Keep-Baby-Dry Layer: This layer is made in the traditional with suede fabric, although you can also find it in fleece! Either fabric is soft and wicks moisture away from baby's bottom. Some families have problems with sensitivity to the suede fabiric, and so a fleece layer would be prefered at those times.
  • Color/Aesthetics: This diaper is only available in solid prints. There are the traditional colors available that are white, blossom, butternut, grasshopper, and twilight, and the more recent solid prints that are more vibrant, which are Clementine, Ribbit, Moonbeam, and Zinnia. No patterns are available at this time. There have been special spring selections in the past where the tabs have been the opposite vibrant/traditional color, such as a grasshopper diaper had ribbit colored stretchy tabs, but this has only been offered for a limited amount of time. Other than that, this diaper does have a decent color selection, girly, boyish, and gendar neutral prints. The front closure seems to be a type of butterfly look and is not bad looking so to say. The rise snaps in the front for changing sizes may not be appealing to everyone.

Ease of Use

  • Closures: The closures are velcro and so resemble very similarily to disposibles. They stretch to get the best, most personal fit to each baby and make things simple for user. They also are able to overlap so that tighter fits are possible. The tabs are also rounded so that it is more comfortable for baby and user. These are very simple to use without instruction. Laundry tabs are also available next to tab closures, they are square and are securely sewn to diaper. They do fray over time but they work well at keeping velcro closure tabs from catching on other wash items during laundry time, and so keeping velcro from fraying and lasting longer. I have had no fraying or loose/stray strings from the front velcro or the tab closures at all in over a year.
  • Similarity to disposibles: I believe these are the closest type of cloth diaper style you can get to disposibles as possible without it being an AIO. The diaper is shaped like a disposible , the tabs are in the same place, and they attach the same way as a disposible would, with stretchiness and everything. Definatly a wonderful beginner's diaper for those converting from disposibles to cloth, keep it simple!
  • AIO/pocket/fitted/prefold/hybrid/one size/cover: This diaper is a pocket diaper, and so requires stuffing and unstuffing of the insert. This requires minimal time, but it does require an extra step and a little learning process with how best to lay the insert in the pocket to best prevent leaks and bulk. This diaper is also a one-sized diaper, and so does require a learning of how to use rise snaps. This is an easy skill to aquire. However these two things make it so it is not the "most simple" diaper out there, but it is very much easy to use and easy to learn to use without instruction.
  • How size and fit is adjusted: Size is adjusted through rise snaps in the front. This adjust for size of the diaper, but does not adjust for fit. Fit around the waist can be done with the stretchy velcro closure, however nothing adjusts for fit around the legs. Babies differ with skinny or chunky legs, and so something is needed to adjust for this that is not available. I have not had any leak issues since the beginning with this problem, and so it is not a big deal, but it should be noted if you have a skinny baby or a very chunky baby.

Fit:

  • Trimness: This diaper is a one size diaper, and so trys to account for all sizes a baby will go through before being potty trained, and all different absorbancies. Due to this, it will be bulkier on a smaller child, and fit a larger child more trim. I have noticed these diapers are not as trim as other one-sized diapers, but these other diapers may not have the same absorbancy available. These BumGenius One Sized diapers have thicker tabs around the waist, and a thicker soaker area, making them not the most trim diapers available, but not the bulkiest out there either. SAP does fine with these diapers, but does improve with use of other more trim diapers for when she is more active. Trimness could be inproved but does not significantly impact child. I believe it is the style of this diaper that allows it to be a wonderful night time diaper without leaking, and thus for this feature trimness is not inportant and might compromise that feature if changed.
  • How adjustable diaper is for size/absorbancy: Size is highly adjustable as it is a one-sized diaper. As child's body shape changes, they get bigger, thinner, chubbier, longer, older, etc., size can go up and down with easy use rise snaps. Absorbancy is also highly alterable as it is a pocket diaper and can be stuffed with what is needed. If wanted, a different insert could be used to make it trimmer, or a small one for a newborn, or a insert with a doubler for nap times, or even a folded prefold for long car rides or night time. This diaper can be stuffed pretty full and still not leak!

Performance and Functionality:

  • Leaks: This diaper is very well leak-proof, but it does leak in certain situations. This diaper leaks when the size it is on is not correct, like when baby has grown and needs to be sized up. It also leaks for a newborn before they are large enough to wear it without problems (about 10-12 lbs for SAP). We also had problems with this diaper leaking when SAP learned to roll over and started sleeping on her side and her belly. She still does this but her body fits the diaper better now and so it does not leak in this situation any longer. As it is a pocket diaper, it also leaks after she has gone poo-poo. The poo in pocket diapers stays on top of the stay-dry-layer of the diaper, and if it is not changed soon after and baby pees again on top of it, the pee cannot be absorbed into the diaper since poo is covering the stay-dry layer. This can easily be fixed by frequent diaper chages, every 2 hours for a cloth diaper (any diaper in fact), or whenever you smell a poo-poo!
  • Absorbancy: Absorbancy is excellent. The regular insert fit well and absorbed well for day use and nap time use. Night time use requires a hemp doubler. We have went 3-4 hours rarely without a leak with a single insert, but it is not recommended to leave your baby without a change that long, but the insert is absorbant enough for this to occur if the situation arrises, without leaks occuring. The newborn insert was not used for SAP as by the time she fit into these BumGenius One-Sized diapers she was too much a heavy-wetter and needed regular inserts, the newborn could not absorb enough. They do work well as doublers for nap time or night time until baby gets older though.
  • Leg Gussets: The leg gussets are very simple on the BumGenius one sized diaper. They are nothing special, but they are very soft on the legs, and do not leave any marks on the baby. They have never been too tight on SAP, nor too loose.
  • Nap/Bedtime use: These diapers are designed not for trimness but for leak-proof and userability, and they make the perfect night time/nap time diaper! You can easily stuff the amount of absorbancy you need for each situation and no matter the position you baby likes to sleep should not leak.
  • If Fit is True: It is recommended that this one-sized diaper fits 7-35lbs, from newborn to potty training. However, almost everyone who has used these diapers from the beginning throughout and me and SAP included have concluded that these diapers will not truely fit an infant that small. They will be able to be put on your baby, but they will most likely leak alot of the time until your baby reaches from 10-13lbs. SAP started wearing these more often around 10lbs and fully without leaks at all by 12lbs. Each child is different in body shape and so it will differ for each child. For SAP, who is a small child and was born small at just under 7lbs, it took until she was 2 months to fit into these without leaks.
  • How insert is removed: Insert does not remove by iteself in the wash and must be removed by user, either by pulling it out or flipping the opening open and shaking the insert out. This is usually not too much a deal but can be a bit yucky at times diapers can get messy.
  • Wear and Tear: SAP is almost 14 months old now, and these diapers are still completely usable! The velcro, the closure tabs, the fabric are all in excellent condition and holding up, as well as the rise snaps. The laundry tabs could definaly need replaceing, as of about a year old, and the elastic might need to be refreshed after she is done with these diapers. The microfiber terry inserts have held up to being washed every 2-3 days wonderfully, the tags are unreadable and bairly still there but the fabric still absorbs and stays together like day one. Not as soft as day one but it does not touch baby's skin (and never should come in contact with babys' bottom with diaper on!) and so that is not a necessity. No fibers comeing apart and workign just as well.

Quality/Cash Analysis

  • These diapers usually are about $18 new.
  • The fact that these diapers are extremely dependable and very versitile and easy to use, plus the fact that the fabric and features save for the velcro laundry tabs has held up for 14 months thus far and still going makes this a high quality diaper.
  • For $18 to get a cloth diaper with the quality and dependability of the BumGenius 3.0 One-Sized diaper is a steal! These diapers are also offered in discount packs of 3, 6, 12, and 24, and coupon codes and sales usually occur at many stores almost all the time for free stuff or a free diaper with purchase, or a certain % off. I definalty think that the quality of this diaper for the price it is sold for is more then worth it without any second thoughts.
